Talk by Professor Juanita Sundberg

“Listening to Sargassum beyond the Sargasso Sea: Multispecies Storytelling and Seaweed Blooms in the Mexican Caribbean.”

In this talk, Professor Juanita Sundberg, an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of British Columbia, will talk about the Sargassum seaweed.

Since 2014, Sargassum seaweed has been beaching on the Mexican Caribbean coast in unprecedented and massive volumes, with devastating consequences for human and other-than-human communities. While Mexican institutions and media frame Sargassum as an invader, this research suggests Sargassum has very different stories to tell about its forays beyond the Sargasso Sea. The talk will address Sargassum as an interlocutor and present storylines that emerged from a process of listening.
